How to Choose the Perfect Family Photographer in Cedar Rapids, Ia (And Get Photos You’ll Treasure Forever)
The first time I hired a family photographer for myself, I didn’t know who or what it was that I was looking for. I simply opened the phonebook (yes, it was that long ago), found the largest ad and figured, hey, they must be the best. We arrived to a cold, dark studio, chose our favorite scenic backdrop (ugh), sat in one spot and proceeded to look at the camera for the next 30 minutes. Weeks later our printed photos arrived and while the quality was great, they lacked everything I was hoping for because I simply didn’t know what “it” was and I certainly wasn’t going to find it in a phonebook! Fast forward a few months later, I was gifted some photos from a family friend who had casually taken some shots of us just hanging out as a family at home. BOOM! This was it! This was what I was looking for! Genuine interactions, no stiff poses or fake smiles. Honestly, not a single one of us was looking at the camera. To this day, they are some of my most favorite and treasured family photos. And while that might not be everyone’s vision, that’s the magic of finding the right photographer for you and your family. It’s not just about pretty pictures or picturesque locations, it’s about capturing the heart of who you are together. Whether you’re planning your very first family photo session or searching for someone who can make your crew feel at ease, here’s how to choose the perfect fit.
Why Choosing the Right Family Photographer Matters
Choosing the right family photographer is about more than just snapping pretty pictures — it’s about preserving the unique story of your family in a way that feels authentic and timeless to you. Photos become heirlooms, passed down through generations, they capture moments you want to relive again and again. But the wrong photographer can leave you with stiff poses and images that don’t reflect your family’s true personality.
Take my experience for example. Although the quality was great, I was left feeling frustrated and disconnected from the images I received. When I think back to when my friend took our photos, the difference was obvious: we were laughing together and interacting with one another like no one was watching, The final images felt like a true reflection of us. That’s why selecting a photographer who understands your vision and style is essential.
Know Your Photography Style
Not all family photographers work the same way — and that’s a good thing! Understanding the different photography styles can help you decide what feels right for your family.
Lifestyle Photography: Focuses on candid moments and natural interactions. No stiff posing, just authentic connection.
Posed Photography: Traditional and structured, with planned poses and often in a studio or formal setting.
Documentary/Photojournalistic: Captures the family’s day as it unfolds, almost like a storybook.
I definitely fall into the Lifestyle and Documentary categories. I let the kids play, say silly words, and ask mom and dad to join in on the fun. Those candid smiles and emotions really start to shine through and before you know it, our time together it over!
Questions to Ask Before Booking
Before you book, asking the right questions can save you from headaches later. Here are some must-asks:
How long have you been photographing families? Experience matters when capturing fleeting moments.
Can I see a full session portfolio? Look beyond highlights to see consistency.
What’s your editing style? Make sure it matches your taste — whether that’s light and airy or rich and moody.
Where do you typically shoot? Studio, home, outdoor locations, or even special places like a flower farm (wink, wink).
Preparing for Your Session
Preparation can make all the difference in how your photos turn out. Before each session, I send my clients a brief email with a few simple questions to learn more about their family’s unique dynamic, a special detail about each member, and their vision for the final images. This helps me connect with my clients on a deeper level and ensures we’re all aligned for a smooth, meaningful session together.
Timing matters, Be sure to ask what time of day your session will be held. My favorite time to shoot outdoors is during that “golden hour”, an hour or so before sunset when the light is perfectly soft and flattering. When shooting indoors I aim for mid-day, when the sun is at it’s highest point allowing the most indirect light to enter your home. When possible, try to keep these times in mind when scheduling your children’s nap time.
Setting reasonable expectations that are age appropriate can significantly improve your family photo session experience. Just between us? A little bribery goes a long way too!!
Making the Most of Your Session
Relaxation is the key to natural, authentic photos. Trust your photographer’s guidance and let your family be themselves.
Kids will be kids — and sometimes their spontaneous laughter or playfulness can create the best shots.
Be flexible and be patient. Repeat. Be flexible and be patient.
Choosing the right family photographer means finding someone who understands your vision, guides you through preparation, and helps you relax during your session. Whether you prefer candid lifestyle photos or posed portraits, the goal is to capture your family’s authentic story.
